Monmouth Castle
A brief history |
Only a fragment is left of Monmouth Castle. This once important castle; the curtain wall, gatehouse and great round keep, which stood until the Civil War where the Great House now stands, have all completely vanished. All that is left is the ruined Great Tower and Hall. These stand on the edge of a precipitous slope down to the river Monnow, on the west side of what was the castle ward
Monmouth castle is located close to the centre of Monmouth town on a hill towering over theĀ River Monnow
Once an important border castle, it stood until the English Civil War when it was damaged and changed hands three times before suffering the indignity of slighting to prevent it being fortified again. After partial collapse in 1647, the site was reused and built over by Castle House.
